What is a blood test?
A blood test involves taking a small sample of blood from a vein, usually in your arm. Your sample will be tested in a laboratory and can help your healthcare team:
- Check your overall health
- Diagnose medical conditions
- Monitor existing conditions
- Assess how well treatments are working
Before you arrive
To help make your appointment easier:
- Drink plenty of water – Being well hydrated can make it easier to find a vein
- Check if you need to fast – Some blood tests require fasting. Follow any instructions provided by your healthcare professional
- Take medication as advised – If you are unsure, contact the clinician who requested your blood test
- Wear comfortable clothing – Loose sleeves make it easier to access your arm
- Bring your appointment details – Have any appointment information available when you arrive
What happens at your appointment?
Step 1
Check in: Arrive at the clinic and take a seat in the waiting area
Step 2
Identity check: We will confirm:
- Your name
- Date of birth
- Relevant appointment details
Step 3
Blood sample collection: A trained phlebotomist will take your blood sample
Step 4
All done! A dressing will be applied, and you can usually continue your normal activities immediately
Nervous about needles?
You are not alone. Many people feel anxious about having a blood test. Please tell a member of staff if you:
✔ Feel nervous
✔ Have fainted before
✔ Feel dizzy around needles
✔ Have had difficulty with blood test previously
Our experienced team will do everything possible to make you feel comfortable.
Helpful tips
- Try taking slow, deep breaths
- Listen to music
- Chat with your Phlebotomist during your appointment
After your blood test
To help prevent bruising:
✔ Keep pressure on the area for a few minutes
✔ Leave your plaster on for at least 15-30 minutes
✔ Avoid heavy lifting with the affected arm for a few hours
✔ Drink plenty of fluids
Most people can return to normal activities straight away.
When should I seek advice?
Please seek medical advice if you experience:
- Persistent bleeding
- Increasing swelling
- Increasing redness or warmth
- Significant pain
- Any symptoms that concern you
What about my results?
Your blood sample will be sent to the laboratory for analysis.
Results will be sent directly to the healthcare professional who requested your blood test.
Important
The phlebotomy team cannot provide your test results. If you would like to discuss your results, please contact the clinician, GP practice, or hospital team that requested the blood test.
